As the tidal wave of free digital EP's and mixtapes continue to drench the internet I try to stay afloat and keep my ears open for the next big thing. Usually, the freebies I come across lack a certain punch-- whether it be originality, quality, or overall talent-- lately, nothing knocks me out. However, a few months ago when I was writing for another website I did come across an MC that instantly caught my attention. He had a simple name, a simple look, and one fierce fuckin' delivery.
Meet Dan Johns. Formerly known as G.O.L.D. Machete, this South Carolina MC destroys all pre-concieved notions of what Southern hip hop sounds like by rattling any hip hop head's cerebral cortex with a fierce passionate delivery, conscious stories, and vivid wordplay. Vacant of a thick southern-drawl, like most of his Carolinian counterparts possess, Dan Johns has a distinct roar that could be comparable to Obie Trice, but attached to a sharper flux.
Starting out as an message board battler and internet rapper Dan Johns would record demos at his house and mail them out to anyone that would take a listen. Eventually, Johns was picked up by a small South Carolina based label which blasted off his career to what we see today.
With five full length releases under his belt Johns has already established himself as one of the top microphone masters in the South East. He continued his climb to the top by recently releasing a free digital download mixtape with DJ Forge entitled "Last of a Dying Breed" that featured the hit track "No Rewinds" and hot guest spots from iCON the Mic King, Chaundon, and Supsastition.
While other Carolinian's continue to ride the sound Little Brother and Supastition created Dan Johns stands alone and represents his territory with original street concious music that could move any type of hip hop fan. So, take advantage of Dan Johns kind free offering-- download the free tape "Last of a Dying Breed" and tell me if Dan Johnson doesn't...
