Usually, a producer is the man behind the scenes, a person that provides the skeleton, and then lets the artists take care of the rest as they fade away forever from that tracks spotlight. However, there are those rare maestros that embed their name into their audience's minds because they consistently come with heat every single time a track is released. If the name is on the record's sleeve you KNOW it will be worth the cash. If their producing the entire album you KNOW they will be able to carry the artists weight and make the final product feel complete. The producers that carry this gift are the ones you know by name-- DJ Premier, RZA, Dilla, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre. These are the sure things. The names you look for on a record other than the MCs. The orchestrators of classics.
Recently, when listening to a debut album from a rapper by the name of 6th Sense ("Highing Fly") I was floored by crisp, overwhelmingly pure, and gripping production. When I looked to see who the producers were I saw that it was done by one name-- Frequency. A young producer from Long Island who has laid down certified bangers for big names in hip hop, such as: Ghostface Killah, Ras Kass, Snoop Dogg, Wordsworth, eMC, 6th Sense, and much more.
Frequency's sound can best be described as a smooth and eclectic mix of J-Dilla, Pete Rock, and Just Blaze. However, don't let my foolish comparisons throw you-- Frequency has a sound all of his own. Instead of deliberately taking styles from the legends I mentioned before, Freq has taken bits and pieces from all, smashed them up with a pristine record collection and has laid down some of the finest beats the industry has heard in years. Whether its the addicting "En Why Cee" (Juganot, Joelle Ortiz, and Uncle Murda), the powerful "Highing Fly" album by 6th Sense, or the "Think About It" track that allowed everyone's favorite Snoop Dogg to return-- there is no doubt that Frequency has the fingertips to put the heart, soul, and fire right back into the industry.
While the cornerstone names of the production world continue to lay down their bangin' bedrock the new generation of artists are on the rise, continuing to build what their forefathers set before them. Already equipped with a booming discography and numerous DJ battle awards Frequency has proven to be part of the new wave of artists to look for, and more. From the sultry samples to the versatile drum hits, Frequency--
