Got Next: U-N-I

By: R.M. London

"Who are some young artists that will lead the new hip hop generation into the next decade and consistently make great music?" If someone asked you that question right now-- what would you say? Do you have an answer? It's tough. There is no question that the veterans of this culture and genre still remain the glue that holds it together. There has been a few glimpses of hip hop's future with the emergence of Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, amongst others, but still not enough youthful stars (with career power) in the radio and independent realm. However, I did find a duo that can be one of the answers to my opening question. A colorful tag team from Inglewood, California that shattered numerous speaker tweaders with their 2007 street album "Fried Chicken and Watermelon," U-N-I.

MCs Thurzday and Y-O make up U-N-I; a smooth pair of pungent poets who melt in your speakers and in your ears, while combining conscious concepts, comedic compositions, and sub shaking rhymes and rhythms. The surprising 2007 summer street album "Fried Chicken and Watermelon" is a collection of feel good whip-bangers that will appeal to the elitists, mainstream rap fans, and even your casual hip hop listeners. An absolute mind blowing record full of powerful production (Swiff D, Ro Blvd., Moufahza, Proh Mic, Diabolic and Dame Taylor) that is sure to fill up an ER room full of sore necks and severe whiplash injuries.

After meeting on the first day of High School and causing a ruckus in their cafeteria with crowd pleasing cipher sessions, U-N-I came together and formed one of hip hop's most promising and exciting duos since the world was introduced to Blackstar in 1998. While artists like The Cool Kids, Kidz in the Hall, and Frank N Dank attempt to get crowds to have fun again with boom-box blasting music, it is Thurzday and Y-O who stand out and not only make it look easy, but set the bar for all the artists who are trying to accomplish what they've already seem to have mastered.

If you are looking for a hip hop group that can get the party moving, rattle the insides of your ride, and shake the guts of your dome piece-- look no further. It is without question that this Inglewood item...
